Cummins Westport Engine for the Mack TerraPro and LR

Mack Trucks says it’s taking orders now for its TerraPro and LR refuse truck models with the 8.9-liter L9N engine from Cummins Westport. Mack made the announcement at October’s 2017 Canadian Waste & Recycling Expo in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Mack is making the natural gas-fueled 8.9-liter Cummins Westport L9N engine formerly the ISL G Near Zero available on its TerraPro (left) and LR model refuse trucks.

L9N is the new name for the ISL G Near Zero, certified to emit 90% less NOx than is required by the U.S. EPA. The new nomenclature was announced at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo meeting in Southern California this past spring (F&F, May 5).

‘A Viable Alternative Fuel’

“Natural gas continues to be a viable alternative fuel, providing a secure fuel supply and a steady price,” Mack refuse product manager Curtis Dorwart said in a release. “With the L9N, customers can take advantage of natural gas’ benefits and further reduce their environmental footprint,” he said.

Mack notes that the spark-ignited L9N can run on both CNG/compressed natural gas or LNG/liquefied natural gas. Both fuel variants can be based on RNG/renewable natural gas.
