Fresno-Based Firm Opens Branch Close to Busbuilders
Fresno, Calif.-based A-1 Alternative Fuel Systems has opened a branch in Elkhart, Ind., where close proximity to body companies makes it well placed to compete for gaseous fuel conversions of shuttle buses.
The independent company is a Qualified Vehicle Modifier for Ford NGVs, and also handles GM products. A-1 uses equipment from Landi Renzo USA and Landi’s Baytech unit and from Impco Automotive for its NGV conversions, and from Roush CleanTech for propane/LPG, says business development and sales manager Will Gutilla.
A-1 Elkhart will be able install CNG, LNG, and propane autogas systems on most U.S. EPA- and California-certified vehicles.
Body Companies Wanted an Independent
“Several bus manufacturers in Elkhart, along with many of their dealers, have been lobbying the Ford certified gaseous fuel QVM company to provide its conversion services nearby, and now A-1 Alternative Fuel Systems has made that move,” states a release.
“We are in a strong position to apply our depth of experience in California to markets all around the country,” A-1 president Mark Gilio says in the Elkhart announcement.
400 in Fresno Last Year
“Over the past eighteen years we have built a reputation in California that I am very proud of and my goal is to make sure that the rest of the country is able to experience, firsthand, exactly what enabled us to earn that reputation,” Gilio said.
A-1 installed natural gas systems on more 400 vehicles in Fresno in 2012, and is targeting like numbers in Indiana. A-1 says it “will be cross-engineering its range of platforms (Ford E-450, F-550/650, F-59, GM G4500) with body builders of the major manufacturers in Elkhart and the surrounding areas.”
