Launches Class 7 Propane Truck
Alkane Truck has opened a manufacturing facility in Summerville, S.C., which is expected to add 300 new jobs over the next two years. This announcement ties into the company’s launch of its Class 7 liquid-injected propane cab-over truck.
The cab-over truck is powered by an 8.8 liter Power Solutions International engine and a six-speed Allison Transmission system. The truck has gained U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board certifications and has achieved compliance with U.S. Dept. of Transportation rules, the company said.
“We truly have an amazing story from our inception several years ago to the introduction of our Class 7 truck today. We have the first and currently the only cab over truck of this weight class powered exclusively with either LPG or CNG in America,” said Alkane Truck Company CEO Bob Smith.
Job Creation in South Carolina
Founded in 2012 with its headquarters in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Alkane Truck is leasing an existing 100,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Summerville. It’s expected to employ more than 300 automotive technicians once it reaches full capacity within the next two years. The company also expects ancillary hiring from its vendors in the area, said Steve Rayborn, vice president of global sales at Alkane Truck.
The truckmaker is in discussions with state officials about receiving an incentive grant for the manufacturing facility, Rayborn said.
Propane Trucks Coming
Full production of these Class 7 propane cab-over truck will begin in the first quarter of 2016. They’ll be sold throughout the company’s established network of 62 trucks dealers who operate 130 truck dealership locations in the U.S. and Canada.
Alkane Truck is getting interest in its propane-powered truck for bobtail fuel delivery trucks from propane suppliers; general delivery box trucks; and from beverage delivery companies. The truck is getting 565 foot pounds of torque at 1500 rpms, which makes it very competitive with Class 7 diesel trucks, Rayborn said.
The Class 7 truck is also available as a CNG-powered model. In 2016, the truckmaker will launch a Class 8 truck available in both CNG and LNG versions.
