‘For the First Time Ever, Has Not Purchased Any Diesel Buses’

CleanFuel USA is talking up the recent order of 50 propane autogas-fueled Saf-T-Liner C2 school buses from Thomas Built by the Chicago-area operator Cook-Illinois, noting that the vehicles have CleanFuel USA LPI/liquid propane injection fuel systems.

Cook-Illinois provides service for customers in the Chicago area via no fewer than 18 school bus subsidiaries. The company bought both CleanFuel USA Thomas Built and Roush Blue Bird school buses fueled by propane autogas this year, but for the first time – no diesels.

Cook-Illinois provides service for customers in the Chicago area via no fewer than 18 school bus subsidiaries. The company bought both CleanFuel USA Thomas Built and Roush Blue Bird school buses fueled by propane autogas this year, but for the first time – no diesels.

Cook-Illinois “is quadrupling its current fleet of propane autogas school buses for next year and, for the first time ever, has not purchased any diesel buses,” CleanFuel USA says.

The buses have 8.0-liter PIthon brand engines from PSI/Power Solutions International.

‘A Big Problem’ with Diesels

“We’ve had a big problem with the newer 2007 and 2010 emission diesel engines,” Cook-Illinois fleet director Roger Bannerman says in the CleanFuel USA release. “Maintenance on these buses is costing us a fortune,” he said.

With propane autogas buses, “It has been a great experience with no big repairs, and we follow our normal preventative maintenance schedules with no additional work,” he said.

$1.29 for Propane Autogas

And, “paying $1.29 for propane autogas and the ease of setting up infrastructure on-site convinced us to switch,” Bannerman said.

Bannerman told F&F that Cook-Illinois earlier this year ordered 100 propane-fueled buses from Blue Bird with the Ford Triton V-10 engine and fuel systems by Roush CleanTech. The company has also ordered 25 gasoline-fueled Blue Bird vehicles.

Gasoline as a School Bus ‘Alt Fuel’

Bannerman said he expects all of the Blue Bird vehicle to be delivered in August, and for the Thomas Built vehicles to arrive in November.

PSI said today that Navistar’s IC Bus is launching a gasoline-fueled school bus powered by PSI’s 8.8-liter gasoline engine – augmenting a propane-fueled offering.
