Two Sites to Support Fueling of 122 Propane School Buses

The East Stroudsburg Area School District in eastern Pennsylvania has approved the first-phase purchase of 52 propane autogas school buses, and is to decide this month how to fuel them at two different sites.

The district is getting 42 Type C Blue Bird Propane Vision buses from dealer Brightbill Body Works – 36 vehicles able to accommodate 72 passengers and six 48-passenger buses with wheelchair lifts – and ten propane-fueled 30-passenger Thomas Built Minotour vehicles from Rohrer Bus.

The Blue Bird buses have propane autogas fuel systems from Roush CleanTech and the Thomas Built vehicles have propane autogas fuel systems from CleanFuel USA.

122 Vehicles Over Three Years

“The long-term savings are part of our plan for being fiscally responsible to taxpayers,” district CFO Jeff Bader said in a published report. “Autogas is a less expensive fuel than diesel, and we can keep the buses longer this way.”

The propane vehicles are to enter into service in July 2017 in time for the next school year.

“We are in the process of turning all 122 buses over to propane in the next three years,” East Stroudsburg ASD transportation director Bob Sutjak told F&F.

‘Comprehensive LPG Fueling Solution’ Sought

The district went out to bid last month for propane fueling installations at its south bus lot in East Stroudsburg and its north lot in Bushkill, Pa., both to have 18,000-gallon propane storage capacity with two hoses able to dispense fuel at 12 gallons per minute.

“The qualified LPG fuel contractor must provide a comprehensive LPG fueling solution including all equipment, equipment installation, training, ongoing support, maintenance and fuel supply,” states the December bid request.

East Stroudsburg ASD estimates consumption of 126,000 gallons of propane autogas for the 2017-2018 school year, 252,000 gallons for 2018-2019, and 306,000 gallons for 2019-2020.
