Phoenix Firm Pledges 84-mpg Car for Just $6,800
Phoenix-based Elio Motors will show its $6,800, 84-mile-per-gallon, three-wheel vehicle at CES, the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas on January 7. The vehicle, with “an anticipated 5-star safety rating,” is to hit the U.S. car market in the first quarter of 2015.
“Elio Motors is focused on affordability,” Elio Motors founder and CEO Paul Elio says in a release. The aerodynamic three-wheel car, he says, is “unlike anything else in today’s market.”
“You can buy three Elios for about the cost of an average vehicle,” the company says.
“The Elio’s ground-breaking Safety Management System is a perfect example of how we are working to put an innovative twist on transportation,” Elio says in the CES announcement.
Engine by IAV
The Elio is to be manufactured in Shreveport, La. with an engine from IAV Automotive Engineering and an eight-gasoline gallon fuel tank making for single-fill range of about 670 miles.
Available colors, according to the Elio website, include True Blue, Rocket Silver, Red Hot, Licorice, Sour Apple, Creamiscle and Marshmallow.
Alterative fuels like compressed natural gas and propane are under consideration, and could be added to the Elio Motor portfolio once the basic vehicle enters production in December, says fleet sales VP Brendan Carey.
Alternative Fuels? Someday, Maybe
“The issue with CNG and propane is that they add cost to the vehicle,” Carey told F&F. “Thousands of dollars of cost.” The same is true of electric drive, he says.
“As prices come down and range is extended in regards to electric vehicles, we would be willing to look at making a sensible vehicle to offer to the marketplace,” Carey says.
“I am looking forward to all of the possibilities that could be available with alternative fuels and our vehicle.”
