CARB Approves Certification Changes

Natural Gas and Propane Autogas Upfits Made Easier,
But Agency Is Asked to Be ‘Nimble’ on Future Changes

As expected, the California Air Resources Board has approved changes aimed at substantially streamlining the certification process for propane autogas and natural gas vehicle upfits. The changes bring CARB’s requirements closer to those of the U.S. EPA (F&F, August 19).

California Moves Closer, But Not Quite, to U.S. EPA on Gaseous Fuels,
Agency Board to Vote on Proposal in Sacramento at End of the Month

As expected, the California Air Resources Board has moved to update its certification requirements for gaseous fuel vehicles. If approved, CARB’s requirements would be closer to those of the U.S. EPA, but still considerably stricter, especially with respect to OBD – onboard diagnostics.

Meeting on January 22 on Streamlining Alt Fuels Certifications

The California Air Resources Board will hold a workshop in El Monte on January 22 to begin the process of streamlining the state’s stringent requirements for alternative fuel and other vehicle conversions.

Peter Ward, seen here at October 2011’s NGV Technology Forum in San Francisco, has retired from the California Energy Commission and with Michael Smith has formed Alternative Fuels Advocates, LLC as a public affairs consultancy emphasizing transportation energy policy and business development.
