Cites Problems of Disappointing Infrastructure, Limited Range

Daimler’s Car2Go car-share unit has advised some 40,000 subscribers in the San Diego area that it’s replacing the all-battery fleet of Smart ForTwo cars with the gasoline version of the diminutive two-seater. The company cited problems of limited range (65 miles compared with 342 miles on a tank of gasoline) and a disappointing EV charger build-out by now-defunct Ecotality.

Daimler is renewing its all-electric Car2Go car-sharing fleet in San Diego. Car2Go offers point-to-point service – rentals can commenced and cars parked at conclusion anywhere within the local service area. The San Diego area now covers 45 square miles – all served with 100% battery-power Electric Smart Fortwo cars.

Daimler’s Car2Go Fleet Is Getting 86 More EVs

The Car2Go fleet in San Diego, which launched late last year with 300 battery electric Smart Fortwo cars, is getting 86 more, reports Abe Samari, who handles the U.S. Southwest, including Southern California, for Daimler Vehicle Innovations, LLC.
