‘The Time Is Ripe for the Electric Truck,’ Manufacturers Says,
Claiming 26-Tonne Vehicle as ‘First Fully Electric’ of Its Kind

Daimler has revealed its 26-tonne/57,000-pound Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck as a fully battery electric vehicle with single-charge range of about 124 miles (200 kilometers). It is “the first fully electric truck with an admissible total weight of up to 26 tons,” the manufacturer said.

A Freightliner Cascadia 113-inch BBC day cab tractor powered by the new Cummins Westport ISX12 G natural gas engine took off from ACT Expo Thursday, headed east on the manufacturer’s first-ever heavy duty U.S. crossing –fueled all the way by public-access CNG.

“We wanted to show the status of natural gas infrastructure,” Daimler Trucks marketing strategy GM David Hames said Wednesday. The truck will stop at roughly 700- to 750-mile intervals to fuel – “entirely on public fueling stations,” he said.

Daimler Trucks North America said last week that the U.S. EPA has certified its complete line-up of model year 2013 on-highway, vocational and medium duty vehicles as fully compliant with GHG14, its new greenhouse gas emissions regulations for 2014.

Natural gas played a major role.
