Open Standard Terra 53 Boasts ‘Flexible Multi-Protocol Design’

ABB is promoting its Terra 53 line of UL-listed DC fast chargers for electric vehicles for versatility and flexibility. The units are available SAE J1772 Combo or CHAdeMO connectors, for example, or with both.

And, they are designed for open standard network connectivity, allowing charging services providers to bill and track as they choose, and to mix and match equipment.

ABB’s Terra 53 DC fast chargers are available with SAE Combo or CHAdeMO connectors, or both.

“Our primary business model is to accommodate as many business models as possible,” says Wisconsin-based program manager Andy Bartosh.

20 to 50 Kilowatts

The Terra 53 is designed for the “charge and go” segment, ABB says, and as such is “ideal for use at car dealerships, fuel stations and high turnover parking applications.”

Payment options include smart phone connectivity or RFID card data-handling – or both. “The Terra 53 multi-standard DC charging station’s smart connectivity allows remote monitoring, maintenance and functional upgrades that provide customers with the tools necessary to gather granular usage statistics and reports,” ABB says.

The product is promoted at 20- and 50-kilowatt power ratings, although ABB’s modular design allows for flexibility within that range, Bartosh says – 30- or 40-kilowatt units may be custom–ordered.

“This charger is a cost effective solution to charge all open standard DC-capable cars in cities, on highways or in fleets,” ABB says. “The Terra 53 CJ is also very easy to integrate into an existing AC and/or DC charging network.”

Typical charging times range between 15 and 30 minutes.

ABB’s Terra 53 is a candidate for a four-unit DC fast charge installation by Greenlots for the San Francisco International Airport (F&F, June 23).
