Mercedes Hybrids for Deutsche Post DHL

Daimler late last week reported delivery of ten diesel-fueled Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid vehicles to DP Fleet GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Post DHL, at the manufacturer’s plant in Wörth, Germany.

The Atego Hybrid is the first series production hybrid truck in Europe, Daimler says.

Trials, including Deutsche Post DHL tests last year, indicate that the customer can expect fuels savings of up to 15% as compared with conventional diesel vans.

The Atego BlueTec Hybrid is based on the Atego 1222 L Euro 5, with 218-horsepower, 4.8-liter engine. The hybrid model has a water-cooled electric motor with maximum output of 44 kilowatts (59 horsepower), driven by lithium ion batteries. Other electric drive vehicle by Mercedes employ power-dense HVH motors from Remy International.

“The electric motor is installed behind the combustion engine and the clutch,” the manufacturer says, “but in front of the transmission. This configuration enables the truck to be powered by engine and motor together or by either of the drives on its own.

“The parallel hybrid drive enables start-up of the vehicle on electric power, recuperation by the electric motor and optimization of the diesel engine’s characteristic.” An automatic start/stop function for the engine further reduces fuel consumption, emissions and noise, “to zero at traffic lights,” Mercedes says.

The vehicles for Deutsche Post DHL will be deployed throughout Germany in the mail and freight segments: trucks assigned to DHL’s freight operations will operate in Wustermark and Hamburg, while the five Atego Hybrids to be used by the company’s mail division will go into service in Hennigsdorf, Dortmund, Cologne-Gremberghoven, Gersthofen and Kolbermoor.
