UCS Says EVs Clearly Win on Emissions

New Study Finds That While EVs Are Better in Some Places than Others
They Are Far Better Than Gasoline Vehicle Emissions-Wise Everywhere

Electric vehicle hold great potential for contributing to reductions in global warming emissions, according to a new study by the Union of Concerned Scientists. “Cleaner Cars from Cradle to Grave” compares battery electric vehicles with similar gasoline-engine vehicles over their entire lifecycles, from raw materials used in manufacturing, driving the vehicle, and disposal or recycling. UCS sees the potential of electric vehicles helping to reduce emissions substantially through growth in a clean electricity grid powered by more renewable energy.

Wireless charging will contribute to mass-market production of electric vehicles by automakers and their suppliers, according to a webinar presented by Qualcomm Halo. Keith Malinson, an industry analyst with WiseHarbor, and Anthony Thomson, vice president of development and marketing, Qualcomm Halo, gave a presentation on the technology innovations bringing wireless electric vehicle charging (WEVC) to market.

UPS Deploying 18 Electric Trucks

DoE Provided Grant Funding

UPS has purchased 18 electric delivery vehicles for the Houston-Galveston area in Texas. The purchases are part of a partnership with U.S. Department of Energy, local governments, and the non-profit Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE). These vehicles were designed by the Workhorse Group for UPS, and are expected to reduce consumption of an estimated 1.1 million gallons of diesel fuel over 20 years.

Year-long Test Results from Electric Truck

IKEA and TransPower announced results from their first year of testing a demonstration vehicle. An electric yard tractor has been driven at IKEA’s distribution center in Tejon, Calif. TransPower’s electric propulsion has powered a Kalmar heavy-duty tractor, which is being used to minimize CO2 emissions.

Charger Proposal Gaining Opposition

San-Francisco-based Pacific Gas & Electric’s plan to deploy 25,000 Level II electric vehicle chargers and 100 fast chargers, filed in February, has been revised and put on hold by the California Public Utilities Commission. CPUC is seeking public comments on the PG&E revised plan through the end of this month.
