Colorado’s UQM Technologies reported a new order from Electric Vehicles International for UQM’s PowerPhase HD 220 electric drive systems, for delivery later this calendar year to power all-electric walk-in vans and medium-duty commercial trucks.

‘Largest Vehicle-to-Grid Project in the Country’ Feted at Los Angeles AFB

The U.S. Air Force and California Energy Commission celebrated deployment of a long-awaited fleet of 42 mostly V2G-capable vehicles at the Los Angeles Air Force Base on Friday. By letting charged EVs give electricity back to the grid when needed, vehicle-to-grid technology allows the fleet “to provide more than 700 kilowatts of power to the grid, sufficient power for more than 140 American homes,” the Air Force says, talking up V2G as a way to both save money and enhance security. updated November 18

With Cold Car Electric Refrigeration Unit and UQM Driveline

California’s Kings Canyon Unified School District is getting set to unveil a 100% battery electric refrigerated box truck it plans to add to its fleet of reefers this summer. The truck is a Freightliner M2 converted to battery electric operation by Electric Vehicles International. It has an electric cold box by Texas-based Cold Car.

The new trucks include the utility’s first Class 8 hybrid, its first Ford F-550 PHEV by Electric Vehicles International with UQM driveline, and the first production range-extended electric pickup from Via Motors.

Colorado’s UQM Technologies (AMEX:UQM) is seeing its revenues surge, although expenses for “expanded production engineering activities” are keeping the company in the red. But the firm’s latest financials reflect “a pretty good quarter and a good year overall,” UQM president and CEO Eric Ridenour told analysts.

Deliveries for Coda Automotive’s battery electric sedan accounted for much of the UQM sales surge, to $3.8 million in the fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31, a gain of 61% from $2.3 million in the fourth fiscal quarter of 2011.

With a Million Miles Logged, Firm Vows to ‘Quickly Accelerate’

Pure battery electric trucks operated by PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay North America division “have charged their way to a million miles,” the company said May 10, noting that 176 vehicles from Smith Electric Vehicles have eliminated the need for approximately 200,000 gallons of diesel fuel – and will be augmented by 100 Newton Series 2000 Smith EVs this taking the all-electric fleet to more than 280 units.

Frito-Lay also operates Daimler Freightliner M2-chassis battery trucks from California’s Electric Vehicles International (the EVI-MD; F&F, March 26).
