Deal for 100 Freightliners is Ryder’s First in Canada, Largest for CNG

Ryder System said Friday that Quebec’s C.A.T. – Canadian American Transportation – has signed a full-service lease agreement for 100 compressed natural gas sleeper tractors. The deal marks the first CNG lease arrangement for Ryder in Canada’s, and its largest to-date for natural gas vehicles.

C.A.T.logoRyder will also provide maintenance for the 100 CNG vehicles in Montreal, where its service facility is being upgraded for NGV work.

The trucks are Freightliner Cascadia 113 CNG units with 72-inch sleeper and Quantum 169 tank package, a Ryder spokesman told F&F. Each will have a Quantum Q-RailLite rail-mounted and Q-CabLite back-of-cab cylinder array.

The vehicles are to be delivered in mid-2015.

Ryder notes that it’s been leasing trucks to C.A.T. for the past eight years. “Ryder will replace almost one-third of C.A.T.’s fleet of 325 vehicles with 100 CNG sleeper tractors,” states this morning’s announcement.

“With Ryder’s natural gas vehicle and maintenance expertise, we have the confidence that we can get the service and performance we need from our fleet today, while operating more cost-efficiently and environmentally-friendly,” said C.A.T. president Daniel Goyette.

The Coteau-du-Lac-based C.A.T. fleet ranges from Montreal to Laredo, Texas.

New Features for Cascadia 113 Natural Gas

Freightliner will show a Cascadia 113 Natural Gas tractor at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville this week – it’s the first trade show display of a CNG Cascadia with the 48-inch sleeper cab that’s just gone into full production. The truck is powered by the 400-horsepower version of the ISX12 G engine by Cummins Westport.

The latest CNG Cascadia has a 10-speed manual transmission and 140 DGE capacity factory-installed compressed natural gas fuel tanks with capacity of 140 DGE – 100 diesel gallon equivalents back-of-cab and 40 DGE on the left-hand rail.

“We also just announced the addition of Meritor WABCO’s OnGuard collision avoidance system on our Cascadia natural gas tractors when spec’d with a manual transmission,” advises product marketing manager Greg Treinen.

The truck is being unveiled at 4pm Wednesday.

MATS 2014 runs March 27-29 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.
