Saf-T-Liner C2 CNG bus – the order book is open.

“This will be the first compressed natural gas engine in the industry on the popular Type C product,” states a release. “Orders can now officially be placed.”

The Saf-T-Liner C2 CNG is powered by the 6.7-liter, dedicated-natural gas, spark-ignition Cummins Westport ISB6.7 G engine. The new bus is California Air Resources Board-certified and exceeds EPA 2013 emission requirements. It has an Allison 2000 series transmission.

‘Lower-Priced, Cleaner and Increasingly Abundant Fuel’

“Since we launched the Saf-T-Liner HDX CNG 20 years ago, we’ve seen how efficient and economical CNG can be for our customers,” Thomas Built president and CEO Caley Edgerly said in a release.

“We are pleased to take our ever-popular C2 model and upfit it to be used with compressed natural gas for the many school districts which are looking for a lower-priced, cleaner and increasingly abundant fuel supply,” he said, terming the Saf-T-Liner C2 CNG “a great addition to our family of alternative-fueled buses.”

‘Orders Are Rolling in Now’

“Orders are rolling in now and production is expected to begin” this month, the manufacturer says. Missouri’s North Kansas City and Blue Springs school districts are among the early takers.

CleanFuel USA supplies the liquid propane injection fuel system for the vehicles’ 8.0-liter engine by Powertrain Integration, including fuel rails, lines, tank package with fuel pump, and control module. The engine is now marketed as the PIthon (F&F, May 11).

“The CleanFuel USA LPI propane autogas fuel system is technologically advanced, fully integrated and factory-installed, requiring no aftermarket modifications, for seamless integration and consistent quality,” CleanFuel USA said this morning.

Potential? ‘Huge’

Both vehicles are U.S. EPA- and California Air Resources Board-certified.

“We are ecstatic that the S2G and C2 are in full production, as demand is strong in the fleet industry for propane-powered solutions that meet these two vehicles’ market needs,” said, CleanFuel USA founder and managing director Curtis Donaldson said in a release.

“With a significant order bank and ever-increasing customer interest, the potential for both products is huge.”

The PIthon engine produces 495 foor-pounds of torque at 3100 rpm and 339 horsepower at 4100 rpm, CleanFuel USA. Both the S2G truck and C2 bus feature Allison 2300 automatic transmission with PTO provision.
