Mack Trucks says it’s taking orders now for its TerraPro and LR refuse truck models with the 8.9-liter L9N engine from Cummins Westport. Mack made the announcement at October’s 2017 Canadian Waste & Recycling Expo in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Some 3,000 Units Affected by Turbocharger Oil Supply Line Issue

Cummins is recalling some 3,000 natural gas-fueled, 8.9-liter Cummins Westport ISL G engines. “These engines have a turbocharger oil supply line that may contact or interfere with the turbocharger inlet elbow, clean air intake clamp, or the air fuel control tube, and result in an oil leak,” says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“If the turbocharger oil supply line oil leaks in the proximity of the engine exhaust manifold there would be an increased risk of a fire,” says the recall notice.

OEM and Retrofit

The engines in question were manufactured from September 13, 2007, to September 23, 2015, NHTSA says.

“The affected engines were sold for use exclusively in Mack Trucks and Navistar vehicles, both as original equipment and as replacement equipment,” the agency says. The recall applies “exclusively” to Mack trucks.

The total number of engines affected is 2,959. The recall carries NHTSA campaign number 15E085000.

Canada’s Largest Fleet of Natural Gas Refuse/Recycling Trucks

Ontario-based Progressive Waste Solutions has officially opened its compressed natural gas fueling facility in Coquitlam, east of Vancouver, which its says supports “the largest fleet of natural gas powered waste and recycling collection vehicles in British Columbia and Canada.”

Mack Trucks is to begin production of dimethyl ether-powered Pinnacle Axle Back models with the 13-liter MP8 engine in 2015. Echoing its corporate parent Volvo Trucks, Mack says that DME is a “non-toxic, clean-burning alternative fuel, offers many environmental and societal benefits, including that it can be made from multiple sustainable feedstocks.”

Mack Trucks unveiled its natural gas Mack Pinnacle axle back model tractor with 11.9-liter ISX12 G engine by Cummins Westport, Inc. during the 2013 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville this week. The LNG-fueled vehicle was built for UPS and shown in UPS brown livery.

Following a trial of a single hybrid electric Mack refuse truck, the New York City Department of Sanitation has taken delivery of five more leased vehicles. They are TerraPro low-entry trucks with parallel hybrid electric drivetrains developed in league with parent Volvo but “optimized,” according to Mack Trucks marketing VP John Walsh, “for the specific requirements of Mack customers.”
