Agency Board Approves Purchase of 525 New Hybrid Buses

New Flyer and SEPTA, the Philadelphia area’s Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, have announced the purchase of as many as 550 of New Flyer’s diesel-fueled hybrid electric Xcelsior XDE40 buses.

New Flyer has disclosed a large order for the Massachusetts Bay Transport Authority including a firm order for 175 of the company’s Xcelsior XN40 compressed natural gas buses and 150 XDE40 diesel-electric hybrid buses, with options for an additional 200 XDE40 hybrids over the next five years.

325 CNG and Hybrid Buses to MBTA, 85 Hybrids for Seattle

New Flyer has notched large orders for compressed natural gas and hybrid buses. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation reports that its board has approved the purchase of 325 forty-foot buses for $222.2 million. Separately, New Flyer said that Seattle’s King County Metro has exercised options worth $130 million for 138 buses, including 85 of the company’s 60-foot XDE60 diesel-fueled Xcelsior hybrids.

Allison Drives for Connecticut DoT’s New Hartford-Area BRT Fleet

The Connecticut Department of Transportation has launched a new Bus Rapid Transit system including 42 new hybrid electric buses with parallel drivelines from Allison Transmission. The new CTfastrak BRT network serves the Hartford area.

New Flyer Industries is flexing its electric muscle at APTA Expo 2014 in Houston this week. The Winnipeg-headquartered company is  showing its first all-battery electric bus, the 40-foot Xcelsior XE40, and has announced the hydrogen fuel cell-powered, 60-foot articulated Xcelsior X60. Both have Siemens electric drives.

Firm Order for Ten Artics with Options for 60 More,
New Flyer Is Also Active on All-Battery Bus Projects 

The Nashville Metropolitan Transit Authority has placed a firm order for ten 60-foot Xcelsior articulated diesel-electric hybrid buses with Winnipeg-based New Flyer Industries. A three-year contract includes two years of renewable options – that could lead to placement of 60 additional vehicles.
