RFID for CNG Safety, Says NGV Global

NGV Global has issued a 66-page white paper advocating RFID for enhanced CNG vehicle safety

NGV Global has issued a white paper on natural gas vehicle safety, urging radio frequency identification as a way of quickly and routinely determining the inspection status of key NGV components, especially compressed natural gas cylinders.

The association is recommending RFID systems as a means of verifying CNG vehicles and cylinders at the point of refueling. The 66-page White Paper resulted from NGV Global technical committee, discussions on ways “to reduce the incidence of illegal or accidental tampering of CNG cylinders and installations” and, in the words of executive director Brett Jarman, “reduce preventable incidents and to stimulate discussion and action within the industry and regulators.”

‘A Few Dollars per Vehicle per Annum’

“RFID systems present the simplest and most secure form of verifying a vehicle,” the paper states: “There are fewer means of circumventing the RFID system; it has the highest likelihood of detecting tampering or foul play of a vehicle’s natural gas system while providing the highest degree of verification, ultimately contributing to reduced incidents and increased safety… Electronic verification systems are harder to circumvent than human verification.”

Cost? “On the surface,” states the paper, RFID systems look expensive. “[But] if the costs are correctly amortized, even if they are entirely passed on to the consumer, the end cost is a fraction of a cent per unit of fuel dispensed… or only a few dollars per vehicle per annum.”

NGV Global’s RFID white paper does not address LNG-liquefied natural gas vehicles.
