The Mass Transportation Authority in Flint, Mich. makes its own hydrogen for two zero-emission fuel cell buses, is expanding its capabilities in compressed natural gas with a view to providing pubic access fueling, and powers its fleet of more than 120 propane autogas vehicles at six different locations.

Oregon’s ClearEdge Power has disclosed the pending acquisition of UTC Power from United Technologies, but the fate of UTC’s PureMotion fuel cell business for transportation is likely to remain unknown until after the purchase closes – “early in 2013,” ClearEdge says.

Flint Embraces Propane, Eyes Hydrogen

The Mass Transportation Authority in Flint, Mich. is embracing alternative fuels, augmenting an existing compressed natural gas fueling unit at its Grand Blanc facility with a dozen more economical propane installations, and celebrating the arrival of a hydrogen fuel cell bus, on May 21.

MTA operates a Ford E-450 cutaway with a dedicated propane upfit by Roush CleanTech, expects a second in May, and two more in July, says general manager Ed Benning. His agency will go out to bid to deploy a total of 65 propane shuttle buses by year-end – making for opportunity for other upfitters as well. Also by the end of this year, MTA expects have propane fueling at all 12 of its Flint area locations.

AC Transit’s Solar-Boosted Hydrogen

“This isn’t just rain, it’s fuel for more buses,” Proton Onsite chairman Tom Sullivan said April 10 as Oakland’s AC Transit dedicated a hydrogen fueling station in Emeryville, Calif. that will help support a dozen fuel cell buses and as many as 20 hydrogen cars per day.

GM Fuel Cell Cars for the U.S. Military

The U.S. Army has unveiled a fleet of 16 General Motors hydrogen fuel cell vehicles it says are the first ever for the military – armed services in Hawaii will test them for two years “in an effort to research efficient, clean and renewable energy sources and reduce the U.S. military’s dependence on petroleum.”
