Siemens eHighway Runs for SoCal Ports

One-Mile Demo Line with Three Heavy Trucks in Carson,
TransPower and Volvo-Mack for the Electric-Drive Vehicles

A diesel-hybrid truck by developed Volvo-Mack, and a battery-electric truck and CNG-fueled hybrid-electric truck developed by TransPower are taking part in the Siemens-led, SCAQMD-backed eHighway project.

A long-discussed idea to use overhead catenary lines to power trucks exiting Southern California’s big ports is moving closer to fruition: Siemens reports that America’s first “eHighway” demonstration is running, with three different heavy duty, electric-drive trucks “hauling freight.”

New Flyer Industries is flexing its electric muscle at APTA Expo 2014 in Houston this week. The Winnipeg-headquartered company is  showing its first all-battery electric bus, the 40-foot Xcelsior XE40, and has announced the hydrogen fuel cell-powered, 60-foot articulated Xcelsior X60. Both have Siemens electric drives.

TM4 Driveline and a Fast-Charge System from Siemens

Volvo’s Canada-based Nova Bus unit is promoting a fully battery-electric “Electro Mobility solution” transit bus at APTA Expo in Houston. The developmental bus has a Sumo HD driveline from TM4 (which is also Quebec-based) and a high-power, overhead inverted pantograph fast-charge system developed with Siemens.

The Volvo Group is preparing a modified Mack Pinnacle tractor with a smaller diesel engine and a battery pack affording all-electric range of five to ten miles for the government-sponsored overhead catenary power truck project that’s gathering steam in Southern California.

A key part of the funding equation fell into place last week as the California Energy Commission said it’s awarding $1.6 million to retrofit five heavy duty trucks to run on power from an overhead catenary wire using the Siemens pantograph system – part of a $13.5 million program.

78-Foot Van Hool Artics with Siemens, Luxfer-Dynetek, MAN

A new fleet of large, Van Hool-built buses for Malmö, Sweden will be compressed natural gas-fueled – largely with biomethane. The 78-foot ExquiCity 24 buses from Belgium are being purchased by Stockholm-based Nobina as part of a joint venture with the City of Malmö and Skånetrafiken. They are to commence operation in June 2014.

“This isn’t just rain, it’s fuel for more buses,” Proton Onsite chairman Tom Sullivan said April 10 as Oakland’s AC Transit dedicated a hydrogen fueling station in Emeryville, Calif. that will help support a dozen fuel cell buses and as many as 20 hydrogen cars per day.

Siemens said last week that it’s one of the first companies awarded a General Services Administration Schedule 56 contract to provide electric vehicle charging stations to the U.S. government, under which it will supply 20 EV charging units at Veterans Affairs facilities in California and Michigan.

The U.S. Energy Department has awarded nearly $7 million to four companies to develop better connected and more economical electric vehicle chargers – cutting costs by as much as 50% in three years.

“Developing smart electric vehicle chargers will provide more options to consumers and accelerate the build-out of charging infrastructure in ways that strengthen the electric grid,” U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a release.
