HHP: Gothenburg Makes LNG History

‘Breakthrough’ Bunkering of LNG-Powered Tankers
Means LNG Has Arrived at the Port, ‘And Is Set to Stay’

“Liquefied natural gas has arrived at the Port of Gothenburg and is set to stay,” Port management said last week. An LNG-powered oil and chemical tanker was bunkered with LNG while taking on cargo late in October. Earlier in the month, the Swedish port saw its first quayside LNG bunkering, ship-to-ship – “two very important milestones for LNG bunkering in just a few weeks,” states a release.

Anthony Veder’s bunker vessel Coralius bunkering Terntank’s Ternsund quayside at the Port of Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden.

The ships taking on LNG fuel at the port were Terntank’s Wärtsilä-powered Ternsund and Tern Ocean.

“In the interim, five ships bunkered whilst they were at anchor just outside the port,” states a Port release.

Fuel was provided by Skangas via the bunker and distribution vessel Coralius, which is operated by Anthony Veder.

“Even five to ten years ago the idea of ships running on liquefied natural gas would have almost been regarded as science fiction,” Gothenburg Port Authority operations manager Dan-Erik Andersson said in the Port’s bunkering announcement. “Now we have had seven LNG-bunkerings here in less than a month.

HHP Summit in Florida This Coming Week

“It would be no exaggeration to describe this as a major breakthrough,” Andersson said.

Similar breakthrough in North America? Inevitable. Come learn all about it, from high-level policy decisions to the natural gas engines that are displacing diesel now at the sixth Natural Gas for High Horsepower (HHP) Summit November 6-9 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center in Jacksonville, Fla.

The HHP Summit series is organized and hosted by Fleets & Fuels publisher GNA – Santa Monica, Calif.-based Gladstein, Neandross & Associates
