Solar Impulse Delayed in Hawaii

Will Stay in Oahu Until April as Long Flight Saw Battery Damage

The historic ’round-the-world journey of the 100% sun-powered battery electric Solar Impulse 2 airplane has been delayed at least until April –  the aircraft’s lithium polymer batteries suffered “irreversible damage” from overheating during this month’s five-day flight from Japan to Hawaii (F&F, July 7), the Solar Impulse team said this morning.

Longest Leg of Around-the-World Journey Using No Fuel Is Completed:
The Next Stop Is Phoenix for Aircraft Demonstrating Clean Technologies

The fully electric Solar Impulse – Si2, the Swiss organization’s second 100% battery-powered aircraft – has completed its 7,200-kilometer/4,475-mile flight from Nagoya, Japan to Honolulu. Organization co-founder and CEO André Borschberg made the five-day solo journey, the longest in aviation history.

Longest Leg of Around-the-World Journey Using No Fuel – Right Now:
‘Clean Technologies & Renewable Energies Can Achieve Incredible Feats’

The fully electric Solar Impulse airplane – Si2, the Swiss organization’s second – is in the midst of the longest and riskiest leg of its historic Round-The-World mission, flying as of F&F presstime from Nagoya, Japan to Hawaii. It is a second attempt at the 7,200-kilometer/4,475-mile crossing after weather forced diversion of the aircraft to Nagoya following a takeoff from Nanjing, China.

Swiss All-Electric Airplane’s No-Fuel Journey Is to Start Early in May

The Swiss backers of the Solar Impulse all-electric airplane will attempt to cross the U.S. via a series of flights this spring, commencing around May 1 at Moffett Field south of San Francisco.
