Fleet Management Expo Organizer Cites Indiana Religion Law

Indiana’s controversial religious freedom law has prompted the organizer of next month’s Fleet Management Expo in Indianapolis to cancel the event – and re-schedule it as part of April 2016’s SWANApalooza in Charleston, S.C.

April 2016 with SWANA in Charleston instead of Indianapolis next month.

FME, says a release from Michigan-based Waste Events, “has been postponed until 2016 due to the events surrounding the passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) in the State of Indiana…

“The producers of FME believe they cannot move forward with the event in the current venue given the negative impact the law is having on overall participation by municipalities and private entities,” Waste Events said. “Several states are outwardly voicing disdain and have imposed bans on state-funded travel. This largely impacts a good portion of FME participants.”

An Even Bigger SWANApalooza Next Year

Waste Events said too that it “stands with the other organizations that believe intolerance will not be tolerated.”

FME was to have taken place May 4-6.

Waste Events is instead joining with Solid Waste Association of North America, stating that FME will be one of six solid waste industry events, “all in one place at one time,” in Charleston.

The second SWANApalooza last month in New Orleans included SWANA’s

  • 38th Annual Landfill Gas & Biogas Symposium;
  • 19th Annual Landfill Symposium;
  • Road to Zero Waste Conference; and
  • Spring Training & Exam Center; and
  • the U.S. EPA’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) Workshop.

“SWANA is excited to have FME join SWANApalooza 2016,” SWANA deputy executive director Meri Beth Wojtaszek said in today’s FME 2015 cancelation announcement. “We are eager to combine the energy of these two great events for attendees.”
