Unit Allows Full Electrification of All Accessory Components

Ohio’s Vanner has introduced its IAP II – increased accessory power – system for the full electrification of accessory components on hybrid electric buses.

The new Vanner system is designed for hybrid electric buses with the Allison H 40/50 EP parallel drive. It’s a customizable electric power distribution platform – handling up to 30 kilowatts of power – that “helps facilitate the 100% electrification of components such as electric air conditioning systems, electric air compressors and electric power steering systems.”

‘Improves on the Hybrid’s Efficiency’

“Full electrification of a hybrid bus is the single most advantageous option a transit authority can realize that will improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and lower maintenance costs,” Vanner president Steve Funk said in an announcement at APTA Expo in Houston this week.

“The durable Allison H 40/50 EP Hybrid already has a proven track record as a reliable sustainability solution,” Funk said. “IAP II improves on the hybrid’s efficiency by distributing the hybrid power throughout the entire bus. Both Allison and Vanner recognize full electrification is key to making a better hybrid.”

IAP II includes a water-cooled Vanner exportable power inverter (VEPI) producing 230-volt three-phase AC power for the bus accessories. A Vanner-built high-voltage distribution module “acts as a smart electrical grid for the hybrid bus.”


‘Best of Both Worlds’

The system includes either a single or dual hybrid beltless alternator for up to 600 amps-at-idle, 24-bolt DC charging.

“The hybrid,” said Vanner VP Chris Collet, “is its own electrical generation power plant. It is not dependent on a daily charging cycle to keep it on the road,” he said, as is a fully electric buses.

“An IAP II equipped hybrid bus continues to use the best of both worlds of mechanical and electric efficiencies,” Collet said.
