Virginia’s Stylus Publishing is promoting the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Vehicle-to-Grid: Linking Electric Vehicles to the Smart Grid.

The new book, edited by Jenwei Lu and Jahangir Hossain, “provides an integrated treatment of smart grid using electric vehicles by exploring the connection between the stationary grid and PEV power storage.”

All-Electric ‘Zeus’ Flatbed Features Vehicle-to-Grid Capability

Phoenix Motorcars reports delivery of a V2G-capable “Zeus” battery truck to the U.S. Navy at Port Hueneme, Calif. The full-sized flatbed truck will be used as a service vehicle to transport supplies and equipment for facilities maintenance at Port Hueneme and nearby Point Mugu, Phoenix says.

Zeus stands for zero emissions utility shuttle.

The vehicle is equipped for V2G, vehicle-to-grid charging, meaning it can direct power both to and from the electric grid. Thus the truck “will serve as a low-cost mobile power source, and an outlet to increase energy security.”

The project was funded by ESTEP, the Energy Systems Technology Evaluation Program in the Office of Naval Research.

The vehicle features single-charge range of about 100 miles, Phoenix says.

Phoenix recently delivered to the first of four Zeus trucks to JPL, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, also in Southern California (F&F, April 3).

The California Energy Commission, citing the state’s goal of 1.5 million zero emission vehicles by 2025, is offering to fund Applied Research and Development projects “that will advance technologies and strategies for smart and efficient charging and vehicle-to-grid communication interfaces that will provide maximum benefits to both the electricity grid and the plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) market.”

‘Largest Vehicle-to-Grid Project in the Country’ Feted at Los Angeles AFB

The U.S. Air Force and California Energy Commission celebrated deployment of a long-awaited fleet of 42 mostly V2G-capable vehicles at the Los Angeles Air Force Base on Friday. By letting charged EVs give electricity back to the grid when needed, vehicle-to-grid technology allows the fleet “to provide more than 700 kilowatts of power to the grid, sufficient power for more than 140 American homes,” the Air Force says, talking up V2G as a way to both save money and enhance security. updated November 18

The California Energy Commission is supporting a project led by Washington, D.C.-based National Strategies to build six battery electric school buses with vehicle-to-grid capability, and deploy them with three California school districts. The V2G-capable buses will be built by San Diego-based heavy duty electric drive specialist TransPower.

Concurrent Picks UL-Certified Bi-Directional Multi-Port Inverter

New Jersey’s Princeton Power Systems is talking up selection of its GTIB-30, a UL-certified, bi-directional multi-port inverter, as the basis for charging stations for the Pentagon’s vehicle-to-grid trials at LAAFB, the Los Angeles Air Force Base.

PrincetonPower-logoThe Pentagon recently clarified plans for initial V2G tests at four military bases, with LAAFB prominent among them (F&F, June 3).

V2G allows for the electric grid to be able to draw on the energy stored in multiple electric vehicles in times of peak demand. Put another way, “It is intended that ancillary service driven cost reduction and revenue will partially offset EV fleet lease expense with the potential to improving energy security on base,” according to a Princeton Power release.

‘A Vital Role’

Concurrent Technologies Corp, Princeton explains, “is responsible for overall execution of the LAAFB effort… Working directly with electric vehicle OEMs and third-party fleet-management software aggregators, Princeton Power played a vital role in developing the ground-breaking solution in order to compete in the electrical utility ancillary service markets.

V2G is a relatively simple concept, but complex in its execution, requiring the active participation of and cooperation between numerous organizations and the coordination of complex technologies and software.

“During typical usage,” Princeton explains, “the charging stations will charge the electric vehicles directly from the local utility grid enabling LAAFB personnel to utilize the electric vehicles as transportation within the base.

“When called upon, and when connected to the electric vehicle, the bi-directional charging station will switch power flow directions quickly in order to support vehicle-to-grid energy request by discharging the electric vehicle’s on-board battery.”

‘Just the First Step’

Princeton Power’s “experience with microgrid systems and bi-directional inverters is key for the long term success of this project,” CTC’s Clark Boriack says in Princeton’s LAAFB announcement. “LAAFB will be DoD’s first deployment of bidirectional inverters used for electric vehicle fast charging on such a scale; as well as a major milestone for the company’s push into the electric vehicle bi-directional DC fast-charging station application space,” Boriack said.

“This is just the first step towards deploying our electric vehicle DC-fast chargers across the nation. We will be helping push the electric vehicle frontier by making it feasible for drivers who work or visit to charge their cars without taking large amounts of time out of their day,” said Princeton Power co-founder and chief strategy officer Darren Hammell.

California Funding for V2G Demo Fleets

$2 Million to Demonstrate Smart and Bi-Directional Charging

The California Energy Commission is offering $2 million to demonstrate smart and bi-directional charging of grid-liked electric vehicles. It’s part of a $7 million initiative, Demonstrating Secure, Reliable Microgrids and Grid-Linked Electric Vehicles to Build Resilient, Low-Carbon Facilities and Communities.

CEC-logoAccording to CEC’s (program opportunity notice) PON-14-301, the three-year projects “will advance the integration of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) with the electric grid and with buildings, and will validate the economics of actively managed ‘smart’ one-way charging (SC), vehicle-to-grid (V2G), and/or vehicle-to-building (V2B) use cases….

“Projects must demonstrate SC, V2G, and/or V2B capability at facilities located in IOU (investor-owned utility) territories,” the agency says.

Single-Owner Fleets Preferred

“It is easier to validate the economics of subject technologies in demonstrations involving PEV fleets with a single owner,” notes the solicitation.

PON-14-301 demonstration fleets may be either public or private. CEC wants them to have either a minimum electricity storage capability of 500 kilowatt-hours or consist of six or more PEVs with a minimum combined capacity of 100 kilowatt-hours.

The PEVs should connect via “forward-compatible” chargers “to ensure that investments at demonstration sites yield the greatest value and are not subject to retrofits in the near future.”

End-of-July Workshop in Sacramento

Match funding is required in the amount of at least 25% of the requested funds.

CEC will host a pre-application workshop for PON-14-301 at its Sacramento headquarters on July 29. The agency will accept written questions on the program until August 1, and expects to answer them during the week of August 25.

CEC has set November 3 as the deadline for PON-14-301 proposals to be submitted. Awards will be posted in January with work to start in May 2015 and continue through March 2018.
