Volvo Endorses Renewable Diesel

Terms the ASTM D975 Product ‘A True Drop-In Fuel’

Volvo Trucks North America has approved the use of renewable diesel fuel for all of its proprietary Volvo engines. The company says it’s “the first OEM to endorse the use of advanced hydrocarbon renewable diesel fuel.”

Renewable diesel ‘has a much lower cloud point, which improves the low temperature performance issues commonly associated with conventional biodiesel,’ says Volvo.

Westport Innovations spread the good news that Volvo is going ahead with Westport high pressure direct injection technology for a 13-liter natural gas (diesel ignition) engine for heavy duty trucks, and also trumpeted improvements to its own, Cummins ISX-based 15-liter HD.

The Volvo product “is scheduled to launch for the North American market in 2014,” Westport said.

The 11.9-liter ISX12 G-powered Volvo VNL daycab offers customers 123 inches bumper-to-back-of-cab and has an 80,000-pound gross combination weight rating -- compared with 113-inch BBC and a 66,000 pounds GCWR for the 8.9-liter ISL G-powered VNM daycab introduced last year.

Volvo Trucks is launching the Volvo VNL daycab with new Cummins Westport ISX12 G engine to “positively impact the ROI of our customers,” North American sales and marketing president Ron Huibers said in the firm’s announcement at MATS, the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville.
