The City of Pensacola has been successful with its modest fleet of compressed natural gas-fueled vehicles because it set stringent specifications when buying its NGVs, has insisted on getting QVM/qualified vehicle modifier (or OEM) products, and has not attempted to retrofit existing vehicles for CNG.

CleanFuel USA Teams with Westport for Propane Autogas Pickup

CleanFuel USA disclosed today an agreement with Westport to serve as a supplier for the propane autogas-fueled, 5.0-liter engine Ford F-150 propane truck for 2016. The Westport WiNG-branded vehicle is to employ CleanFuel USA’s LPI/liquid propane injection technology.

Westport is launching a stocking program it says “will see its natural gas vehicles available at select Ford dealerships across the United States,” and talking up its close relationship with DFW, the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, which operates some 450 alternative fuel vehicles and has just ordered 71 new shuttle buses converted to dedicated-compressed natural gas operation by Westport – in Dallas.

Westport is spreading the word that AAA Oklahoma is saving serious money by operating 23 of its 56 vehicles on compressed natural gas. It’s not unusual to see CNG-fueled F-250s servicing gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicles in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, according to the Westport blog.

Clean Energy Fuels purchased BAF Technologies in autumn 2009 to ensure that BAF could handle an historic CNG upfit job it had undertaken for AT&T. BAF has now converted more than 3,000 Ford vehicles for the telcom – out of more than 20,000 overall – and Clean Energy is turning its attention to its core business of providing natural gas fuel.

Westport Innovations, meanwhile, is perhaps best known for its Westport HD system for Class 8 trucks built around the 15-liter Cummins ISX, but shipped only three during the first quarter (by contrast, the Cummins Westport, Inc. joint venture for spark-ignition natural gas engines shipped 1,313 units during the quarter).
