Like many in the natural gas vehicles industry, Worthington Industries is concerned about the increasing number of compressed natural gas cylinder rupture incidents. Such incidents raise obvious safety concerns, and as well, NGV fleet owners and manufacturers are exposed to significant liability risk, which might eventually threaten the growth and adoption of NGVs.

Eight Gillig Buses with Fueling as Part of Pennsylvania Transit Initiative

Pennsylvania’s Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority has ordered its first compressed natural gas buses. MMVTA is expecting deployment late this year or early next of the four 40- and four 35-foot vehicles from Gillig.

Worthington Industries has closed on its majority acquisition of dHybrid Systems, a Utah-based supplier of compressed natural gas fuel cylinder assemblies. Worthington will own 80% of the equity, “with the founder retaining 20% and continuing in a leadership role,” Worthington states in the acquisition announcement. updated October 21

Production of Cylinders for Heavy NGVs to Begin This Summer,
Firm Will Also Show ASME-Approved Toroidal Tanks for Propane

Worthington Industries has prepared a new line of large-diameter Type III compressed natural gas cylinders for debut at the ACT Expo show next week in Long Beach, Calif. Worthington plans production of four standard cylinder types, with custom sizes of 26-inch tanks to 120 inches in length. The firm will also debut a line of toroidal fuel tanks for propane autogas.

MTS Will Be Able to Retire Its Last Diesel and Establish BRT Routes

The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System board has voted to buy as many as 350 CNG-fueled 40-foot low-floor buses by Gillig and up to 165 New Flyer 60-foot low-floor articulated CNG buses through 2017. “The total value of the contracts, if all options are exercised and future funding is available, is in excess of $343 million,” MTS said.

Production of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra 2500 HD bi-fuel CNG pickup trucks is underway in Fort Wayne, Ind., General Motors said late last week, announcing that the vehicles are available for order by fleet and retail customers through Chevrolet and GMC dealers.
