The new U.S. unit of Switzerland’s Fiamm, manufacturer of Zebra brand sodium nickel or nickel-salt batteries, has begun staffing a laboratory, test and repair center in Elgin, just outside of Chicago. The firm expects the facility to be fully operational by September 1, says Kara Haag, general manager of the new FZSoNick, Inc.

The new Fiamm unit was incorporated this past May, she told F&F.

Fiamm took ownership of the Zebra sodium nickel battery technology in 2011, Haag notes. The sodium nickel batteries are manufactured in Switzerland and are comparable in energy density to lithium batteries on a pack-to-pack basis, she says.

Safer

They are also safer, she says, as the sodium nickel technology has none of the thermal runaway – i.e., fire – issues associated with some lithium battery designs.

“Fiamm SoNick sodium nickel storage batteries do not require maintenance yet guarantee durability and reliability,” parent Fiamm says on its website.

Good for the Cold

“The safety of these batteries makes them especially suitable for mobile applications such as cars, vans and buses. The battery has an internal working temperature of 270°C [518°F] which guarantees high performance and durability regardless of the ambient temperature.”

Packs Only

The sodium nickel batteries are thus highly suitable for cold-climate vehicle operations.

Haag notes that unlike some other battery suppliers, Fiamm and FZ SoNick sell only battery packs, not individual cells.

The new FZSoNick, Inc. will exhibit at The Battery Show next month (September 13-15) in Novi, Mich.
