The Union of Concerned Scientists is talking up a new, “realistic” plan to reduce projected U.S. oil consumption by 50% over the next 20 years.

The Union of Concerned Scientists has floated a '€˜realistic'€™ plan to cut U.S. projected oil use by half over the next 20 years.

The Half the Oil plan, UCS says, “offers a clear, achievable roadmap to cut U.S. oil use and move America towards a cleaner, healthier, and more secure energy future.”

The key savings areas are vehicle and freight efficiency, smarter ways of doing business and getting around, and increasing the supply of low-carbon alternatives like electric vehicles and cellulosic biofuels.

“These solutions are not new,” UCS says, “but we can and must do more to position the U.S. as a global leader in clean transportation technology and avoid the problems that increasingly dirty and expensive oil will bring.”
